William Roberts and many of his fellow mutineers were annoyed to have their patriotism publicly challenged by the government, when they were the ones who suffered more than anyone else for the defense of the country. In an address “to their fellow subjects,” the General Committee of Delegates at the Nore angrily demanded to know whether “we who have endured the Toils of a long Disgraceful War [shall] Bear the Shackles of Tyranny and Oppression, Which Vile Gilded Pampered Knaves wallowing in the Lap of Luxury choose to load us with?” George Shave of the Sandwich concluded in the same angry spirit “that the Country had been oppressed for these five years, that the war had been too long and now was the time to get themselves righted.”41
